يا سالكاً منهج أهل التُّقى

يا سالكاً منهج أهل التُّقى

وما تحلّى بخبيث الحرام

وما تحلّى بخبيث الحرام

O you who follow the path of the pious,

O you who walk the path of the pious

and have not adorned yourself with foul, forbidden gain:

And abstain from what is unlawful and impure

دراهمُ القرض الّتي قد غدت

دراهمُ القرض الّتي قد غدت

في أسركم تشكو امتداد المقام

في أسركم تشكو امتداد المقام

The loan’s dirhams, which have now come to be

The dirhams of the loan that have now become

in your captivity, lament their prolonged stay.

Imprisoned in your possession, complaining of prolonged detention

وما لها والله ذنبٌ سوى

وما لها والله ذنبٌ سوى

أن أوسعتكم عند ضيق المقام

أن أوسعتكم عند ضيق المقام

And, by God, they have no fault except

And by Allah, their only crime is

that they brought you ease when your circumstances were straitened.

That they brought you ease in your time of hardship

فجازها بالخير عن فعلها

فجازها بالخير عن فعلها

فإنّما الخيرُ جزاءُ الكرام

فإنّما الخيرُ جزاءُ الكرام

So reward them with goodness for their deed,

So repay their good deed with good

for goodness is but the reward of the noble.

For goodness is the reward of nobility

وها أنا جئتُ شفيعاً لها

وها أنا جئتُ شفيعاً لها

من راحتي منها خلت والسّلام

من راحتي منها خلت والسّلام

And here I am, come to intercede for them—

And here I come pleading for their release

one whose palm is empty of them—and peace.

That I and they may both find peace
