O you, at whose rank the fixed stars on high

    Stand bewildered—and whoever beholds a marvel is bewildered;

And you who, through your eminence, have mounted the shoulders of your age,

And to whom people point in every art.

From every rational discipline you have—and from

The transmitted ones—a badge you now wear.

As for eloquence in speech, it is you

Before whom Rabiʿa and Nizar recite.

Lofty rank has warmed to you, though it has grown

Distant and aloof from whoever seeks it.

Through you writing has gained honor; not through it

Have you gained eminence—and in this it takes pride.

All ranks have given you their reins,

So you might attain the finest that one can point to.

So you chose the noblest rank among them—and would

The chosen one be content with anything but the noblest?
