O valiant king, you who waged war

with courage and chivalry among humankind,

and attained every rare accomplishment in the arts,

    and ascended to every station of eminence;

and brought the lions of the West from their forests,

then with them erased the enemies as writing is erased.

You fought them with keen swords with which they

had fought you and harbored enmity.

And you gained what the enemy had possessed; indeed, it

is yours by right, restored in the finest manner.

For though sovereignty kept its distance from you, playing coy,

for a time, then embraced you as a graceful maiden would,

union is sweetest when it comes from one

you love, after resistance and refusal.

Like a lover who parted from his beloved, and the two met again

after their mutual longing and overwhelming passion.

    كلاّ ولم يتخصّصوا بولاية

    The enemies never possessed a kingdom of yours;

no indeed, nor did they claim exclusive rule.

Rather, they were merely guards there for you,

    holding office as deputies,

until, when you sought to reclaim your right

to sovereignty, he surrendered it against his will.

You now command and forbid, just as

your father did there—and more besides.

You spread word of your forbearance among humankind until they came

to seek your favor through every crime.

And you pardoned your enemies, thus slaying them

with remorse for what they had done—such remorse!

And from every land a delegation came to you,

to congratulate you, one delegation following another.

They beheld your brow, its radiance shining forth,

and were granted clemency through the acceptance of intercession.

Yet, for all this, I have been kept from your gates

by a misgiving that all but kills me in a moment.

If I try to rise to eminence, I am held back

from it by fortunes bound to adversity.

I am now in the marketplace of noble deeds, seeking

profit, with no merchandise but verse.

So make—may my soul ransom you—the profit of my trading

an honor whose remembrance is bound to good fortune.

O Ali Bey, son of al-Husayn, your reign has

an authority that endures and admits no end.

May your reign remain everlasting among humankind,

guarded by the Lord's caring eye.

And we are certain of this, for it has been foretold

plainly by the beginnings of your reign.

When Fortune made you king, and submission came

from all the lands in obedience to your command,

she said to the tongues of glory: 'Compose his chronogram:

A reign that endures until the coming of the Hour.'
