أيا قمرا بالطرف يخفى ويظهرُ

أيا قمرا بالطرف يخفى ويظهرُ

وأنواره في منزل القلب تبهرُ

وأنواره في منزل القلب تبهرُ

O moon that vanishes from sight and reappears,

And whose lights dazzle in the heart's abode.

وما هو إلا الفاضلُ العلم الذي

وما هو إلا الفاضلُ العلم الذي

به صار يُطوى الجهلُ والعلم ينشرُ

به صار يُطوى الجهلُ والعلم ينشرُ

He is none other than the virtuous, eminent man

Through whom ignorance has been folded away and knowledge spread.

أحاولُ منهُ القرب والدّهرُ مُبعدي

أحاولُ منهُ القرب والدّهرُ مُبعدي

وأطلبُ جبر القلب والدهر يكسرُ

وأطلبُ جبر القلب والدهر يكسرُ

I seek nearness to him, but Time keeps me distant;

And I seek to mend my heart, but Time breaks it.

ومن رام وصل البدر يوما بسلّم

ومن رام وصل البدر يوما بسلّم

فإنّ عليه وصله يتعذّرُ

فإنّ عليه وصله يتعذّرُ

And whoever one day seeks to reach the full moon by a ladder

Will surely find reaching it impossible.

عززتُم فلم أظفر بنيل وصالكم

عززتُم فلم أظفر بنيل وصالكم

وكلّ عزيز نيلهُ متعسّرُ

وكلّ عزيز نيلهُ متعسّرُ

You are beyond reach, so I have not won union with you;

And every precious thing is hard to attain.
