My gaze has confessed to what my tongue denies.
My eyes confess what my tongue denies
The proof suffices: part of you bears witness against you.
Your beauty itself testifies against you

And many a glance speaks eloquently with a message,
Though an eloquent glance may articulate
While many an eloquent saying has missed its intended point.
And words prove nimble, the meaning is lost

My gaze is enamored of counting the stars,
My eyes are enamored with the stars' array
So it spends the night weeping in darkness and counting.
Weeping through the night, counting each one

My patience and my passion, both in love—
My patience and passion in this love, both
The one is consumed by love, while the other is renewed.
Are undone by desire, yet forever reborn

Love toyed with my heart; then there held sway
Passion toys with my mind, swords flashing
Within it swords that are kohl for glancing eyes.
Wounding the onlooker, though sheathed from harm

And I am smitten with one whose glance and stature hold
It is I in whom eyes and figure for lovers
For lovers, a straightened lance and an Indian-forged sword.
Are refined and graceful, cultured and tender

A young gazelle: I hid my love for him, but it was betrayed
I hid my love though with tears it was undone
By tale-bearing tears that furrow the cheeks.
Those tears preaching my cheeks have betrayed

His glance barred the road to my endurance,
My patience was severed by a mere glance
Yet it keeps me wakeful for longing's nightly visits.
Yet yearning's call has prepared me instead

Whenever a lightning-flash gleams from his mouth,
When lightning flashes from his smile, still
Then tears are a downpour, and my flanks tremble.
Tears rain, merits shaking, devotions due

His honeyed saliva made my heart burn in fire;
Though his smile's lightning has stolen my reason
Do not find it strange that one burning recites the testimony of faith.
Its altar is one I frequent in worship

Whenever the branch of his stature bends, he appears
Bending his perfect form cannot hide
Before you, unique among the company of the beautiful.
His uniqueness of virtues, peerless as one

If his sweet saliva aims to torment me,
Should he wish to end my torment, no wonder
No wonder: among grammarians he is Mubarrad.
His grammar is flawless, meanings parsed clear

And his two eyes have storehouses of arrows;
In his eyes are arrow stores, inexhaustible
How wondrous: they have pierced through, yet are never exhausted.
I see all of him vividly, prostrating to pray

كلٌّeach تراهُyou see it مُشهّدٌhoneyed ومُسهّدُand sleepless
Because of his mouth, sleep has fled from my eye;
Patience is temporary in his beauty's paradise
You see them both: one honeyed, the other sleepless.

So patience perishes in the gardens of his beauty,
His cheeks show mercy, granting audience
And longing is immortal in that paradise.

A supple youth whose beauty has left glances
My idolatry of him grows with rejection
Lingering on his cheek, where visitors keep returning.
Rebuffed by him, yet my passion intensifies

Wavering over forgetting him has exhausted my reproachers,
How often I've hesitated at his doorstep
And love increases in proportion to their reproaches.
Though certainty of rejection gives me pause

If I dare open his affection's door one day
In the opposite! Can wavering coexist with certainty?
The blade of a glance from him will run me through

How often I've built up courage to face
One day, then his glance's sword is aimed straight at me.
The sword of passion brandished in his eyes

And how often I built my hopes on forgetting, only for him to draw
How I've tried to have him clasp me in his arms
From his gaze the sword of love, threatening me.
While God alone fulfils this wish of mine

O you who, within your silvered mouth, turn to gold
How remarkable, your cool lips are protected
My mind, while my kisses are barred from its fruit.
From my kiss, though with passion they ignite

Remarkable your face and figure, both like
My kisses, makes the fire within my heart blaze.

How wondrous your face and stature are, both together:
Remarkable your eyes and tongue - the first denies
A full moon that walks, a branch that sways with it.
The love that the second acknowledges to me

How strange your gaze and tongue are in love:

This one reveals it, and that one denies it.
Do not reject my rivalry in humility

I resemble your waist in the bareness of its frame;
You've melted my soul in passion for you
Do not find it strange that one who resembles it is stripped bare.
Or else how does it rise toward you in worship

I have dissolved my soul's elixir in love for you;
Or do you not see it rising in love for you?
