إذا يا ابن عاشُور تُحرّمُ خلّتي

إذا يا ابن عاشُور تُحرّمُ خلّتي

فإنّي غنيٌّ عنك أعظمُ مأجُور

فإنّي غنيٌّ عنك أعظمُ مأجُور

If, O son of Ashur, you refuse to relieve my need,

If, O Ibn Ashur, you deny me my retreat,

then I have no need of you, and am most richly rewarded.

I can do without you, though generously paid.

وصدقتُ فيك الظّنّ منّي وإنّما

وصدقتُ فيك الظّنّ منّي وإنّما

يُصدُّق جُلُّ الأغنياء بعاشُور

يُصدُّق جُلُّ الأغنياء بعاشُور

And I was right in my opinion of you; for only

I judged you well, yet truly,

on Ashura do most of the wealthy give alms.

Only the poorest trust in Ibn Ashur.
