I said, as heaven’s rain poured from clouds,

And its torrent kept flowing among us unceasingly:

O sky, pouring rain upon the towns,

Except upon a town whose trees are dry—

Why have you urinated water upon the land of Sfax,

From the clouds, like a sprinkling of dew for a night traveler?

She said: I count her among those people about whom

The poet of the land has spoken two verses:

A people who, when guests rouse their dog to bark,

Say to their mother, “Urinate on the fire.”

So she withholds her urine, too miserly to give it freely,

And urinates for them only in measured amounts.
