يلوحgleams دُرّانtwo sets of pearls منثورscattered ومنتظمand strung together
Her lips and my eyes both smile—
At her mouth and my eye, as she smiles,
two kinds of pearls gleam, one scattered, one strung.
Two sets of pearls gleam—scattered and strung.
وللعيونand for the eyes ازدحامcrowding عندat طلعتهاher appearance
كذاthus علىaround كلّevery عذبsweet الودaffection يزدحمcrowds together
Eyes throng at her appearing,
And eyes throng when she appears;
as every sweet watering-place is thronged.
Thus people crowd around anyone whose affection is sweet.
هيفاءُslender-waisted تخطرsways as she walks فيin مثلthe likeness of القضيبthe slender branch علىupon
مثلthe likeness of الكثيبthe sand dune ومنهاand of her اخرُanother مُنهضمُdrawn in
Willowy, she sways like a supple branch poised over
Slender-waisted, she sways in a branch-like form above
a dune-like curve, another part of her drawn slim.
A dune-like mound; another part of her is drawn in.
وإنand if تبدّتshe appeared فليليُthen my night مُشرقٌradiant أبداalways
وإنand if خفتshe faded فنهاريthen my day كلّهall of it ظُلمُdarkness
When she appears, my night is forever radiant;
And if she appears, my night is always radiant;
when she vanishes, all my day is dark.
And if she fades from sight, my whole day is darkness.
والوجدُand longing والصّبرُand patience منّيfrom me حينwhen أذكرهاI remember her
كلاهماboth of them منهُfrom it موصُولٌlinked ومُنصومُand severed
Longing and patience within me, whenever I remember her—
My longing and my patience, when I remember her—
through that remembrance, one endures and the other breaks.
Of the two, one is linked to it, the other severed from it.

فطارso it flew away واللّيلwhile the night باقremaining ليسdoes not ينفصمbreak apart
Night’s darkness lent my sleep its wings;
The pitch-dark night lent my sleep its wings;
it flew, while night remained, unbroken.
So it flew away, while the night remains unbroken.
وجّرتand drew الّطيفthe phantom ليto me فيin ليلةa night سنةٌa brief doze
زارتshe visited وبانتand departed فأمسىso became القلبُthe heart يضطرمُblazes
Then, one night, drowsiness drew her phantom to me;
And one night, a brief doze drew her phantom to me;
she visited and departed, leaving my heart aflame.
She visited and departed, and my heart was left ablaze.
فقمتُso I rose للّطيفُfor the phantom مرتاعاalarmed فأرقّنيso it kept me awake
فقلتُso I said أهيwas it she? سرتshe traveled by night أمor زارنيvisited me حُلمُa dream
I sprang up toward the phantom, terrified; it robbed me of sleep.
So I rose, alarmed by the phantom, and it kept me awake;
I said: Was it she who came by night, or did a dream visit me?
So I said, 'Was it she who came by night, or did a dream visit me?'
