Glad tidings for me! I have won the joy I wished for,

In the beloved's happiness and the enemies' anguish.

So joy comes thronging upon my heart,

Like the throng at a watering place.

And difficult questions have unveiled themselves,

    Smiling after gloom and concealment.

At a visit to the one he loves after estrangement.

After our souls had nearly spilled out

In terror, like our tears streaming with blood,

O you whom time has afflicted with an ordeal

That gave so strong a sign of your excellence,

Do not grieve, for you are not the first worthy man

To be struck by calamities and every kind of harm.

A man's excellence incites his enemies against him,

And credit is due to enemies among one's peers.

You have an example in the imams, without whom

Ignorance of all things would have prevailed.

So if you have been imprisoned, then every treasure

Is distinguished by veiling and concealment.

And pearls are found in the depths of the water.

And the full moon is veiled by its dark phase, then reappears,

And the sun is concealed by the mantle of storms.

Nor has he donned a cloak of honor.

And you have indeed outstripped the envious in reaching a goal

That al-Jawza's hand fell short of attaining.

So if they hurled at you what they hurled, they

Are more deserving of excuse than anyone upon the dusty earth.

So they hurled upon you the blaze of this fire, which

Had scorched their hearts through Dhuka, the sun,

Since the sun of your excellence scorched with its radiance

The one you deem the greatest of the envious.
