وأهوى الّذي يُعلّم نفسهُ

And I love the one who teaches himself

فليس لها شيخٌ سواهُ مُعلّمٌ

فليس لها شيخٌ سواهُ مُعلّمٌ

فيا لهف على نفسي من هوى شيخ رُوحه

فيا لهف على نفسي من هوى شيخ رُوحه

For his soul has no master to teach it but him;

For he has no teacher but himself instructing him

So alas for my soul, for loving the master of his own spirit!

Oh how I yearn for a soul whose love is his own spirit's sheikh
