كالموجlike the waves يسموrises لحظهُhis glance بابليBabylonian
And a supple coastal youth, whose rump
My coastline sings its melody
Rises like the waves—his glance is Babylonian.
Like waves rising for an instance gracefully
سألتهُI asked him الوصلunion فلمbut did not يستثقhe trusts
منّيin me ولمand did not أحصلI obtain علىon طائلanything worthwhile
I asked him for union, but he did not trust
I asked for union but he would not trust
Me, and I gained nothing worthwhile.
Me and I gained nothing
ماnot زلتُI ceased أسترضيهI seek his favor حتّىuntil إذاwhen
صرتُI came to be علىon الموجthe waves منfrom السّاحلthe shore
I kept seeking his favor until, when
I kept trying to please him until
I had gone from the shore onto the waves,
I became like the wave from the coast
وصارand became كأسthe cup البعدseparation ليfor me مورداa watering place
وخيطand was sewn منيof me الصدرthe chest بالكاهلto the upper back
And the cup of separation became my watering place,
And the cup of separation became my watering place
And my chest was sewn to my upper back,
And my chest is pierced to the shoulders
شاهدتُI beheld ماthat which بذلsacrificing النفوسlives لهfor it

تصغرseems small فيهin it همّةُaspiration الباذلthe giver
I beheld that for which, even in sacrificing lives,
I saw whatever souls gave him
The giver's aspiration seems small.
The will of the giver seems paltry

So undertake to ride the sea heedlessly,
So I set out to sail the sea out of spite
And defy the words of the reproachful adviser.
And disobeyed the words of the dissuading advisor
