وأغيد فيه عُذر مُصطبر

أصبحتُ من وجده على خطر

And a graceful youth, in whom the steadfast finds an excuse:

My longing for him has brought me into peril.

هو ابن عشر وأربع كملت

هو ابن عشر وأربع كملت

وهكذا البدرُ أوسط الشّهر

وهكذا البدرُ أوسط الشّهر

He is fully fourteen years of age;

And so is the full moon at mid-month.

قال العذُولُ ترى غلائلهُ

قال العذُولُ ترى غلائلهُ

بها بلى قلتُ غير منتظر

بها بلى قلتُ غير منتظر

The reproacher said, “You see his tunics—

They show wear.” I replied without delay:

لا تعجبوا من بلى غلالته

لا تعجبوا من بلى غلالته

قد زرّ أزراره على القمر

قد زرّ أزراره على القمر

“Do not marvel at the wear of his tunic:

He has fastened his buttons over the moon.”
