ونارنجة في حلق بلّورة بدت

لها منظرٌ قد راق كلّ لبيب

And a bitter orange appeared in the throat of a crystal vessel;

Like an orange in crystal's sparkling throat -

its appearance delighted every discerning person.

A sight to please the wisest sage;

فشبّهتها إذ راقني حُسنُ وصفها

فشبّهتها إذ راقني حُسنُ وصفها

بدينار إبريز بثغر حبيب

بدينار إبريز بثغر حبيب

So I likened it, when the beauty of its qualities delighted me,

Seeing its beauty, I compared the sight

to a dinar of pure gold in a beloved's mouth.

To Byzant gold, my lover's lips.
