ألا ربّ ليل بتُّ فيه مُشاهدا
هلالُcrescent محيّاface ناعسdrowsy الطّرفthe gaze يقظاناwide awake
هلالُ محيّا ناعس الطّرف يقظانا
Ah, many a night I spent beholding
O Lord, a night in which I stay up watching
the crescent of a drowsy-eyed face, myself wide awake.
A crescent moon, sleepy-eyed but awake
