The rose laughed only when it was delighted

By the beauty of the plants and the singing bird's voice.

It appeared, and the world revealed its beauties to us,

And wine went forth in its new garments.

Never did the sprigs of basil behold its face

Without the abasement of envy becoming plain in them.

Its resting place is between the two drinking companions and the two dear friends,

And it passes from one hand linked to another.

A perfumed breeze rose to plead its case,

Cleansing hearts of ailments and grief.

So the yearning lover's hand hastened to it, holding it

Against the breast, the entrails, and the liver,

As though it held a cure for his ardent longing,

Or something to shield his eyelids from sleeplessness.

May God torment none but those who torment it

With a dull singer or an ill-tempered companion.
