وَقالَand he said أَرىI see بِجِسمِكَin your body ماsomething that يَريبُcauses concern
The physician was perplexed by the state of my illness.
The physician found the nature of my illness strange,
He said, “I see something in your body that gives cause for concern.
And said, “I see something troubling in your body.
جَسَستُI felt العِرقَthe pulse مِنكَof yours فَدَلَّso indicated جَسّيmy examination
عَلىto أَلَمٍa pain لَهُit has خَبَرٌa tale عَجيبُstrange
I felt your pulse, and my probing led me
I felt your pulse, and my examination pointed
to a pain with a wondrous tale.
To a pain with a strange tale behind it.
فَماso what هذاthis الَّذيthat which بِكَafflicting you هاتِcome now قُلsay ليto me

فَكانَso was جَوابَهُthe answer to him مِنّيfrom me النَحيبُsobbing
What is this that afflicts you? Come, tell me.”
So what is this that ails you? Come, tell me.”
So my answer to him was sobbing.
Then my answer to him was sobbing.
وَقُلتُand I said أَياO طَبيبُphysician الهَجرُestrangement دائيmy illness
وَقَلبيand my heart ياO طَبيبُphysician هُوَit الكَئيبُthe sorrowful one
I said, “O physician, estrangement is my malady,
And I said, “O physician, estrangement is my illness,
and my heart, O physician, is the grief-stricken one.”
And my heart, O physician, is the sorrowful one.”
فَحَرَّكَthen he shook رَأسَهُhis head عَجَباًin wonder لِقَوليat my words
وَقالَand he said الحُبُّlove لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor it طَبيبُa physician
He shook his head in wonder at my words
Then he shook his head in wonder at my words,
and said, “Love has no physician.”
And said, “Love has no physician.”
فَأَعجَبَنيso it pleased me الَّذيwhat قَدhad قالَhe said جِدّاًgreatly
وَقُلتُand I said بَلىyes, indeed إِذاif رَضِيَconsents الحَبيبُthe beloved
What he had said greatly pleased me,
What he had said pleased me greatly,
and I replied, “Indeed it does—when the beloved is pleased.”
And I said, “Yes, there is—if the beloved consents.”
فَقالَthen he said هُوَhe الشِفاءُthe cure فَلاso do not تُقَصِّرbe remiss
فَقُلتُso I said أَجَلyes وَلكِنand yet لاnot يُجيبُhe answers
He said, “The beloved is the cure, so do not be remiss.”
He said, “He is the cure, so spare no effort.”
I said, “Yes—but the beloved does not answer.”
I said, “Yes, but he does not answer.”
أَلاah هَلis there مُسعِدٌa sympathizer يَبكيwho weeps لِشَجويfor my sorrow
فَإِنّيfor indeed I am هائِمٌlovesick فردٌalone غَريبُa stranger
Ah, is there a sympathizer who will weep for my sorrow?
Ah, is there someone to weep with me for my sorrow?
For I am a lovesick wanderer, alone and far from home.
For I am lovesick, alone, a stranger.
