الدَمعُthe tears يَمحوerases وَيَديand my hand تَكتُبُwrites
عَزَّgrew formidable الهَوىlove وَاِمتَنَعَand became unattainable المَطلَبُthe object sought
Tears erase, and my hand writes.
My tears erase as my hand writes,
Love has grown formidable, and what I seek is beyond reach.
Love became difficult and pursuit hopeless,
أَماindeed وَعَينَيby the two eyes of قَمَرٍa moon أَحوَرٍdark-eyed
إِلَيهِto him مِنfrom لَحظَتِهِhis glance المَهرَبُthe refuge
Indeed, by the two eyes of a dark-eyed moon,
But my eyes like a fawn's eyes,
to whom one flees from his own glance,
Flee to him though his glance wounds.
ماnot أَغمَضَتclosed عَينيmy eye وَلاnor أَقلَعَتceased
دَمعَتُهاits tear مُذsince هُوَhe لاnot يُعتِبُmakes amends
My eye has not closed, nor has
My eyes haven't closed since his loss,
its tear ceased, since he will not make amends.
Their tears haven't ceased since he won't forgive.
ماnot زِلتُI have ceased أَستَرضيهِI seek to appease him مِنfor ذَنبِهِhis offense
فَلَيسَyet he does not يَرضىbecome pleased وَهُوَthough he is المُذنِبُthe guilty one
I have kept trying to appease him for his own offense;
I keep apologizing for his guilt,
yet he will not be pleased, though he is the guilty one.
But he won't be pleased though he's the one in the wrong.
