يا نورَةَ الهَجرِ جَلَوتِ الصَفا

يا نورَةَ الهَجرِ جَلَوتِ الصَفا

لَمّا بَدَت لي ليفَةُ الصَدِّ

لَمّا بَدَت لي ليفَةُ الصَدِّ

O depilatory lime of estrangement, you scoured away affection

O light of estrangement, purity of affection,

when the loofah of rejection appeared to me.

When the garment of disconnection appeared to me,

يا مِئزَرَ الأَسقامِ حَتّى مَتى

يا مِئزَرَ الأَسقامِ حَتّى مَتى

تُنقَعُ في حَوضٍ مِنَ الجَهدِ

تُنقَعُ في حَوضٍ مِنَ الجَهدِ

O waistcloth of ailments, how much longer

O dress of sorrows, how long will you

will you be soaked in a basin of hardship?

Be soaked in a basin of effort?

أَوقِد أَتونَ الوَصلِ لي مَرَّةً

أَوقِد أَتونَ الوَصلِ لي مَرَّةً

مِنكَ بِزِنبيلٍ مِنَ الوُدِّ

مِنكَ بِزِنبيلٍ مِنَ الوُدِّ

Kindle the furnace of reunion for me once,

Kindle for me once, the fire of union

with a basket of affection from you.

With a basket of affection from you,

فَالبَينُ مُذ أَوقَدَ حَمّامَهُ

فَالبَينُ مُذ أَوقَدَ حَمّامَهُ

قَد هاجَ قَلبي مَسلَخُ الوَجدِ

قَد هاجَ قَلبي مَسلَخُ الوَجدِ

For since separation fired up its bathhouse,

For since separation lit its furnace,

the undressing room of longing has stirred my heart.

My heart has been a slaughterhouse of passion.

أَفسَدَ خَطمِيَّ الصَفا وَالهَوى

أَفسَدَ خَطمِيَّ الصَفا وَالهَوى

نُخالَةُ الناقِضِ لِلعَهدِ

نُخالَةُ الناقِضِ لِلعَهدِ

The mallow wash of affection and love has been spoiled

The treachery of the covenant-breaker

by the bran of the pledge-breaker.

Has corrupted my cheek and love and yearning.
