Nothing remains of you but your gleaming shadow,

upon the bed, cushioned with a pillow.

All creation rejoiced at your downfall—

whoever among them was certain of resurrection.

How many a gathering devoted to God you have shut down,

so that no hadith might be narrated there with its chain of transmission!

And how many lamps of ours you have extinguished,

so that we might stray from the guiding path!

And how many a noblewoman of a clan you have widowed,

and how many a hadith scholar you have bound in fetters!

Indeed, the captives in the prisons found relief

when processions of sickbed visitors came to you.

And the physician came in the morning to your sickbed, but could not find

any resource in his search for a cure for your illness.

So taste humiliation, both now and later,

and God, Lord of the Throne, lies in wait.

May your paralysis, which afflicts you, last forever,

and may you be bereaved of your children before death.
