وَلَيلَةٍ كَأَنَّها نَهارُ

وَلَيلَةٍ كَأَنَّها نَهارُ

سَهِرتُها وَفِتيَةٌ أَخيارُ

سَهِرتُها وَفِتيَةٌ أَخيارُ

And a night as though it were day—

A night that was like daytime

I spent it awake with virtuous young men.

Stayed up by virtuous youth

لا جاهِلٌ فيهِم وَلا خَتّارُ

لا جاهِلٌ فيهِم وَلا خَتّارُ

وَلا عَلى جَليسِهِ هَرّارُ

وَلا عَلى جَليسِهِ هَرّارُ

No ignorant man among them, nor any treacherous one,

No ignorant ones among them, nor imposters

Nor one who snarls at his companion.

None who babbles on to his companion

لَهوُهُمُ الأَسمارُ وَالأَشعارُ

لَهوُهُمُ الأَسمارُ وَالأَشعارُ

وَمُلَحٌ تُقدَحُ مِنها النارُ

وَمُلَحٌ تُقدَحُ مِنها النارُ

Their amusement is nighttime conversation and poetry,

Their amusement is poetry and songs

And witticisms from which fire is struck.

And witty remarks that spark fires

بِمِثلِهِم تُعاقَرُ العُقارُ

بِمِثلِهِم تُعاقَرُ العُقارُ

وَتُمتَعُ الأَسماعُ وَالأَبصارُ

وَتُمتَعُ الأَسماعُ وَالأَبصارُ

With men like them, wine is quaffed,

With the like of them, life's troubles are endured

And ears and eyes are delighted,

Ears and eyes find joy

وَتُدرَكُ الآمالُ وَالأَوطارُ

وَتُدرَكُ الآمالُ وَالأَوطارُ

And hopes and desires are fulfilled.

Hopes and goals are achieved
