دَفَعناكُمُwe held you off بِالحِلمِwith forbearance حَتّىuntil بَطِرتُمُyou grew insolent
وَبِالكَفِّand with restraint حَتّىuntil كانَthere was رَفعُthe raising of الأَصابِعِthe fingers
We held you off with forbearance until you grew insolent,
and with restraint, until fingers were raised.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَيناwe saw جَهلَكُمyour folly غَيرَnot مُنتَهٍending
وَماand what قَدalready مَضىhad departed مِنof حِلمِكُمyour forbearance غَيرَnot راجِعِreturning
Then, when we saw that your folly would not end,
and that your vanished forbearance would not return,
مَسَنناwe disparaged مِنَof الآباءِthe fathers شَيئاًsomething وَكُلُّناand each of us
إِلىto حَسَبٍancestral honor فيamong قَومِهِhis people غَيرُnot راضِعِignoble
we disparaged some of the fathers, though each of us
came of honored stock among his people, none ignoble.
فَلَمّاthen when بَلَغناwe reached الأُمَّهاتِthe mothers وَجَدتُمُyou found
بَنيthe sons of عَمِّكُمyour paternal uncle كانواthey were كِرامَnoble المَضاجِعِthe marriage beds
But when we reached the mothers, you found
your cousins had been noble in their marriage beds.
