وَقافِيَةٍand many a rhyme غَيرِnot إِنسِيَّةٍhuman
قَرَضتُI composed مِنَof الشِعرِpoetry أَمثالَهاits counterparts
And many a rhyme not of human kind,
With an unearthly rhyme
I have composed its like in verse—
I have composed poetry like it
شَرودٍfar-ranging تَلَمَّعُflashes بِالخافِقَينِin east and west
إِذاwhen أُنشِدَتit is recited قيلَit is said مَنwho قالَهاsaid it
far-ranging, flashing in east and west;
Wandering thoughts that sparkle with fluttering
when recited, they ask, "Who composed it?"
When recited it is asked who authored it
وَحَيرانَand a bewildered one لاnot يَهتَديfinds his way بِالنَهارِby day
مِنَbecause of الظَلعِlameness يَتبَعُhe follows ضُلّالَهاits wanderers
And a bewildered one who cannot find his way by day,
And confused not guided by daylight
through lameness, follows its wanderers.
From the ribs follows its misguidance
وَداعٍand a caller دَعاcalled دَعوَةَthe cry المُستَغيثِof one seeking help
وَكُنتَand you were كَمَنlike one who كانَhad لَبّىresponded لَهاto it
And a caller who cried the cry of one seeking help,
A supplicant who supplicated the supplication of the desperate
and you were like one who had answered it.
And you were like one who responded to it
إِذاwhen المَوتُdeath كانَwas شَجاًa choking obstruction بِالحُلوقِin throats
وَبادَرَتِand hastened النَفسُthe soul أَشغالَهاits concerns
When death was a bone lodged in throats,
When death was difficult on the throats
and the soul hastened to its concerns,
And the soul rushed its occupations
صَبَرتُI stood firm وَلَمand did not أَكُbe (I) رِعديدَةًa trembling coward
وَلَلصَبرُand surely steadfastness فيin الرَوعِterror أَنجىbetter at saving لَهاfor it
I stood firm and was no trembling coward;
I was patient and did not become thunderous
and steadfastness amid terror is safer for it.
And patience in fear is safest for it
وَيَومٍand many a day تَسَعَّرُflare up فيهِduring it الحُروبُthe wars
لَبِستُI donned إِلىto face الرَوعِterror سِربالَهاits coat of mail
And many a day when wars blazed,
And a day in which wars flare up
I donned its coat of mail to face terror:
I donned fear as its coat
مُضَعَّفَةَdoubled السَردِthe mail-linking عادِيَّةًancient, of ʿĀd
وَعَضبَand keen المَضارِبِthe striking edges مِفصالَهاits joint-cleaver
double-linked, ancient armor of ʿĀd,
With repetitive epic structure
and its keen-edged, joint-cleaving sword,
And the wrist of rhythm articulating it
وَمُطَّرِداًand a straight spear مِنof رُدَينِيَّةٍRudaynian make
أَذودُI drive away عَنِfrom الوِردِthe watering-place أَبطالَهاits champions
and a straight Rudaynian spear,
And continually from well-foundedness
driving its champions from the watering-place.
I defend the roses their heroes
فَلَمso did not يَبقَremain مِنof ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept التُقىpiety
وَنَفسٌand a soul تُعالِجُgrapples with أَبطالَهاits champions
So nothing remained of that but piety
So nothing remained of that except piety
and a soul grappling with its champions.
And a soul that handles its heroes
أُمورٌmatters مِنَfrom اللَهِGod فَوقَabove السَماءِthe sky
مَقاديرُdecrees تَنزِلُdescend أَنزالَهاtheir places of descent
Matters from God above the sky—
Matters from God above the sky
decrees descending to their appointed resting places.
Ordained destinies that descend their descents
أَعوذُI seek refuge بِرَبّيin my Lord مِنَfrom المُخزِياthe disgrace-bringing things (continued)
تِcompletes the plural ending يَومَon the day تَرىsees النَفسُthe soul أَعمالَهاits deeds
I seek refuge in my Lord from things that bring disgrace,
I seek refuge in my Lord from disgrace
on the day when the soul sees its deeds,
The day the self sees its deeds
وَخَفَّand grew light المَوازينُthe scales بِالكافِرينَfor the unbelievers
وَزُلزِلَتِand was shaken الأَرضُthe earth زِلزالَهاits convulsion
and the scales weigh light for the unbelievers,
And the scales tipped for the disbelievers
and the earth is shaken in its convulsion,
And the earth shook its shaking
وَنادىand called مُنادٍa herald بِأَهلِto the dwellers of القُبورِthe graves
فَهَبّواso they sprang up لِتُبرِزَso that it may bring forth أَثقالَهاits burdens
and a herald calls to the dwellers in the graves;
And a caller called to the people of the graves
so they spring up, that the earth may bring forth its burdens,
So they rose to reveal their burdens
وَسُعِّرَتِand was kindled النارُthe fire فيهاin it العَذابُthe torment
وَكانَand were السَلاسِلُthe chains أَغلالَهاits fetters
and the fire is kindled, with torment in it,
And the fire was stoked in which is torment
and the chains are its fetters.
And the chains were its shackles
