So the tribe's eloquent spokesman was better suited to silence.

And you exceeded the bounds of praise, so whenever

My tongue sought to describe your qualities, it fell short.

And your praise was sweet, widespread in assemblies,

Just as you were noble in lineage, root, and origin.

You make the dusty passes green again with your bounty's dew,

And with your martial might turn dawn's light dust-grey.

And you bring dawn where calamity is an encroaching night,

So you turn it into the first light of a radiant morning.

The steadfast, lofty mountains long for Ibn Khalid's forbearance,

When the great chief groans like a camel under calamity's weight.

When calamity's uproar clamors in his ears,

You see in him Mount Sharawra and the breeze as it flows.

Pure in his heart's impulses, ready to relent,

He loves pardon all the more when his power is greater.

A young man who seeks honor only to give aid,

Nor wealth except for lavish gifts and hospitality.

And a host with two seething dust-clouds and countless spears,

When it halts at noon in the open, the land turns pitch-dark.

So dense the throng of armored men, it seems

Like the crests of a torrent, swollen and pouring down.

It marched forth, filling minds with terror and awe,

And turned the wastelands into slender spears and armor.

And waded through the pools of the plain until you thought them

Soft, crumbly ground and churned-up yielding sand.

And the far-off wild beasts fled before it in fear

Of pursuit, until the jinn abandoned Abqar.

Its blades, upon the backs of a dust-cloud, seemed

Like lightning flashes driving the dense clouds onward.

Then you left it either routed and driven off,

Slain by the wastelands, or freshly slain in armor.
