إذاwhen تفكَّرْتُI reflect وياand oh سَهْويmy forgetfulness
What have I to do with the world? Oh, my heedlessness,
when I reflect—and oh, my forgetfulness!

I laugh at what, if I pondered it,
I would weep over forever in my sorrow.

اِنif هيit (the world) جادتْis generous ليَto me بالصَّفوِwith unclouded ease
My greatest pleasure in this world is my health,
if it grants me unclouded ease.

مُرْتَهَنٌheld hostage بالأكْلِto eating والنَّجْوِand defecation
And all my health amounts to is that I
am held hostage to eating and defecating.

And woe—utter woe—comes after it,
if you do not find pardon.
