مَلكْناwe ruled فكانso was العَفْوclemency منَّاfrom us سَجيَّةًan innate trait
فلمَّاbut when ملكْتُمْyou ruled سالَflowed بالدَّمِwith blood أبْطَحُAbtah (a gravelly valley)
We ruled, and clemency was our nature.
We ruled, so forgiving was our nature,
But when you ruled, Abtah flowed with blood.
But when you ruled, the land was soaked in blood.
وحَلَّلْتُمُand you made lawful قتلَthe killing of الأسارىthe captives وطالَماand so often
غَدوْناwe used to be عنfrom الأسْرىthe captives نَعفُّwe refrain ونصفَحand we pardon
And you made killing captives lawful, while so often
You made it lawful to kill prisoners, though
We would spare the captives and pardon them.
We always pardoned prisoners and turned away.
فحسْبُكُمُso enough for you هذاthis التَّفاوتُdifference بيْنَناbetween us
وكلُّand every إِناءٍvessel بالذيwith what فيهِin it يَنْضَحُit exudes
So let this difference between us suffice you:
So let this difference between us suffice,
And every vessel exudes what it contains.
For each vessel pours out what is in it.
