ونفسand the very self of حسامHusam (sword) الدينal-Din (the faith) منthrough بأسهhis might مجْرa vast host
The vast host glories in Ibn Muhalhil,
The young Thursday wanders lost, son of the new moon,
And Husam al-Din himself, through his might, is a vast host.
And the soul of Saladin in battle is fierce,
وتعبسand frown جُرْدُthe sleek ones الخيلthe horses تحتbeneath عجاجهhis dust-cloud
فيطربُهاthen makes them rejoice منهُfrom him السعادةُgood fortune والنَّصرُand victory
And the sleek horses frown beneath his dust-cloud,
Horses’ armor rattles beneath them
Then good fortune and victory from him set them rejoicing.
As good fortune and victory excite them,

A youth who taught the tawny, slender spears and sword-edges
A hero who taught the hyenas and gazelles
His valor, until heads and throats complained.
Courage until the prey complained of neck and breast,

When he kindles the two fires at dawn and in darkness,
When he lights the fires of dawn and dusk
The destitute and the vulture rejoice in abundance.
Plunderers and eagles feast on the fertile land,

I have left in his honor far-roaming verses of my praise,
I left verses of my praise for him
That delight the heights of glory when Badr recites them.
That please the glorious when recited by the full moon.
