The sons of al-Muẓaffar—days bear witness—
The tribe of al-Muzaffar, time bears witness,
are unsullied in kindnesses, lineage, and legacy.
Are pure in lineage, morals, and deeds.

ولاand not يحلُّونَthey settle فيin الغُلاَّنِwooded hollows والخَمَرِand thickets
Drought cannot thwart their bounty to their night visitor,
Their places never perplex the visitor,
nor do they camp in wooded hollows and thickets.
Nor do they recline amidst decadence or wine.

Their cauldrons complain of excessive fuel, just as
Their cooking pots complain of excess wood,
their serving maids complain of excessive cold and numbing chill.
As do their waists of excess flesh and hips.

So the maids stay sleepless from going back and forth in bitter cold,
In vigil they toss about deliriously,
while the cauldrons stay firmly set, stoked amid flames.
And awake stoking flames into a blaze.

When their sword-edges rest from combat,
When their youth rest from courting,
they tire from slaughtering old she-camels and camels for meat.
Absent are those who rend the hyena and billy goat.

They brought forth the generous ʿAḍud al-Dīn, when
They grew to support the arm of the noble religion when
bounty had ebbed and human valor had been humbled.
Assistance was scarce and the common folk submissive.

Then he came, a mighty lion, unswerving in his resolve;
Then came al-Aghlab with his white intention,
the clouds of his palms make rainfall needless.
Whose palms' clouds suffice instead of rain.

His bounty rivals the vast, surging sea in abundance,
He defeats green palm trees with his gifts
and his valor surpasses the edge of a keen, hard-tempered sword.
And overpowers the memory of the sharp sword.

And, seated with knees clasped, he surpasses the ancient gray mountain,
The lame bests the firm-footed in flight
when the minds of the sober and patient grow unsteady.
When the flesh of the feather-legged is weakened.

Nor does he hold his favors over others, though his generosity enriches them;
He disdains not to bestow gifts,
yet he counts his lavish gifts as utterly trifling.
Rather he cloaks the despised in his generosity.

When rain from his palms showers upon the one awaiting it,
If an asker comes to his palms,
he lowers his eyes in modesty and restrains his gaze from looking.
He looks away in shyness and averts his gaze.

And though men grow haughty when they give,
And if men rise above his generosity,
he remains humble, without arrogance or insolent pride.
He is tranquil, neither arrogant nor wicked.

In affection, he is a supple branch, soft to the touch;
In love, I am a pliant branch, smooth to the touch,
and in indignation, a fine-edged blade that leaves its mark.
In protection, a sharp sword leaving a trace.

Muhammad the good, a lavish giver of evening meals, when
Muhammad is sustenance on a wintry night
winter snarls and bitter cold ravages wealth.
When the cold grows intense and pierces skins.

Mentioning him in any gathering
were a waft from the gardens, or the fragrance of aloeswood.
Is like a meadow's breeze or sprinkle of rain.

I find words too small for the vastness of his bounty;
My words fall short describing his generosity;
when I praise him, my fullest account is like an abridgment.
My praise, though prolonged, is but concise.

And people wonder at a sea which bestows

Its seekers pearls in excess bounty.

Of former and latter nobility in merit.

The breeze grows sweet by night with every rich perfume,
The morning breeze was sweet in every lofty abode,
for those who inhale it; yet preeminence belongs to the hour before dawn.
To the passionate, and the excellence was of poetry.

Thus time is congratulated; I have not singled out Rajab for this:
Give me glad tidings; I specified it not only for Rajab,
the blessing of your continued life adorns time and the ages.
The prosperity of your existence graces time and era!
