The shade of spearheads, not Baghdad's neighbors,

And full-length mail, not embroidered cloaks,

    By humiliation from praise-spurning scoundrels.

When before it stands a tyrant, unjust in his rule.

I have departed from you: no neck turns back

Toward the dwellings, nor does longing return.

And how many a finely wrought poem follows my departure—

    Fearsome, flashing evil, thundering!

O you who try to bend a shaft that never weakens,

And bridle a strong one who will not be led,

Leave the primeval grey mountain alone, for you

Cannot shift the primeval grey mountain.

And do not sharpen your insults against my words:

For slander is neither my way nor my habit.

Because of you, I have folded my ribs over rancor,

And oppression has multiplied my journeys through lowland and upland.

Whatever lengths you go to, my standing is not slighted

Before kings, nor are my people men of no account.

Yet I have at times been the serpent of the valley.

And glory is lodged in the heart of my scabbards.

And ours in the wilderness is a day whose pelting

With heads fulfills my hope and my promise.

That day its swift steeds keep gnawing their bits,

And the sword lavishes kisses on necks.

Every drunken man sobered at its terror,

Even the Rudayni spear did not sway that day.

And India's white blades laughed there, drinking their fill,

And heads wept in torrents, ever replenished.

As though the blood of men's jugular veins there

Were a surging torrent, or the bounty of Ibn Hammad—

Who slakes the edges of keen swords while they thirst,

    And feeds the guest in drought and plenty;

Who drives a gaping thrust, followed by the

Long, piercing one into the noble warrior's breast and neck.

His indignation does not unsettle his deliberation,

Nor does he taint his gifts with promises.

Deadly force is for war; overlooking faults, for the assembly.

Men's necks are fettered to him by kindness,

Yet his captives do not spend the night in shackles.

He protects and feeds guests amid fear and famine,

So guest and neighbor enjoy safety and provisions.

For he readies no sword, nor promises gifts,

Except to accomplish acts of giving and rescue.

Steadfast in pledges: if treachery chanced to be

A watering place, he would endure a parched man's burning thirst all night.
