The people marveled, their narrator and their scholar,
at what recurred in customs and innovations:
منof جائعٍa hungry man فيin شباطٍFebruary لاno حراكَmovement بهin him
طاوٍempty-bellied يُحالُis put off علىuntil نيسانَApril بالشِّبَعfor his fill
a hungry man in February, unable to stir,
empty-bellied, put off until April for his fill.
فقلتُso I said سهوةُa lapse خرقٍof a generous man عنfrom عوائدهِhis customary ways
لاnot بُخلُthe stinginess كزٍّof a miser عنfrom المعروفkindness ممتنعabstaining
So I said, “A generous man's lapse from his usual ways,
not the stinginess of a miser who withholds kindness.”
ثمَّthen انثنيتُI turned إِلىto همِّيmy sorrow أحاربهُI fight it

Then I turned to my sorrow, fighting it
with your affection, though it stands firm and will not yield.
