دجاgrew dark ليلُthe night هميmy sorrow واكفهرتand grew gloomy بشاشتيmy cheerfulness
دجا ليلُ همي واكفهرت بشاشتي
ورْحتُand I became بحاليin my plight واجماًdowncast أيَّutterly واجمِdowncast
ورْحتُ بحالي واجماً أيَّ واجمِ
The night of my sorrow grew dark, and my cheerfulness clouded over.
The night grew long with my worries and dimmed my cheer,
And in my plight I became downcast—utterly downcast.
So I set out alone, in fear, in fear.
فلماthen when ذكرتُI recalled الأجْرَthe reward فيماfor what لقيتُهُI suffered it
فلما ذكرتُ الأجْرَ فيما لقيتُهُ
تبلَّجتُI brightened حتىuntil كدتُI almost أشكرthank ظالميmy oppressor
تبلَّجتُ حتى كدتُ أشكر ظالمي
Then, when I recalled the reward for what I had suffered,
When I recalled the wage for all that I went through,
I brightened so much that I almost thanked my oppressor.
I brightened up, and nearly thanked my oppressor.
