وقد وهبَت نحْض الذُّرى للسباسب
The mounts wasted by night travel frolic headstrongly,
The companions of nightly revels act pompous,
though they have given the flesh of their humps to the wastelands,
Having been granted the prime of life for pleasures,

like choice milch-camels at al-Gharib one morning,
The hill-slopes of Sufayya are scented at dawn
having grazed on nourishing herbage drenched at night by a downpour,
With a perfumed southern breeze and languor.

When it is said, "Her home is in Iraq,"

Wealthy generosity is not diminished by poverty,
nor need his bounty be milked out with constraining bonds.
Nor is his kindness rationed by misfortunes.

He who cheers the anguished and excites orations
and urges his patience’s raiding bands against misfortunes.
Tempts, with disasters, the patience of his palace.

Bearer of the burden of passionate love and desire,
unyielding in strength, finding respite in toil.

He divided glory and nobility among fits and starts
noble in their endeavors, and from honors he earned.

So among them no absent one equaled a present one,
Thus, none of them were absent, like those present,
nor was any present one beneath an absent one.
Nor were those present, without the absent.
