Tell the pilgrims and those whose dwellings now lie

at al-Jami'ayn the words of a discerning sage:

It is counsel from a loyal, trustworthy man,

pure in affection, who has neither betrayed nor broken trust:

Settle on the hills, dam al-Sa'di, and take

ships as steeds in place of your horses.

For a vast, surging, roaring sea has come to you,

abounding in wave-crests, in a handsome man's guise:

    Abu al-Muhannad Hindi—and I believe he

surpasses the sea in kindness and favors—

the slayer of drought and of the armored foe, when

    the wolf and the thirsty man seek milk together;

overflowing with noble deeds in poverty and in wealth,

pure in conviction, in private and in public.
