On glory’s day, the rain and the keen-edged sword.

And when they listened closely to reports of him,

The unjust man acted justly, and every reputed miser gave freely.

And lavishes favors even when he is not asked.

He is shrewd; his sword-belt hangs upon one much praised,

Passionately devoted to noble deeds, often reproached.

He is fire when indignation rouses him,

And when pleased, the coolness of sweet, flowing water.

So may Nasir al-Din be guarded from death’s vicissitudes

By the Lord of time, for time’s longest span.

Destroyer of spears and armored warriors, his might

Is the doom of custom at forenoon, and the doom of slender spears.

Crown of high honor and a son of the foremost order.

So through you he settled into a lush, moist spring.

And you showed him the dawn of joy after

He had moved amid cares like the gloom of a pitch-dark night.
