O noble youth of bounty and valor,

And your deeds bear witness to what I say.

And you, in whom, when calamity and drought loom,

The seeker of bounty and the fugitive find safety.

Drought is slain wherever you are upon the earth,

And through your two palms the lifeless revive.

So, for those who cry for your protection and your favor,

There is bounty pouring down and help at hand.

The burden of greatness has weakened the noble,

Yet Ra'is al-Din is patient and steadfast.

Spotless in honor and lineage, adept

At lofty deeds, generous-natured and affectionate.

Indeed, a bounty that came unasked

Kept my creditor away, though he was obstinate.

My verse has traveled with it; my verse has always been

An Arhabi camel, on which the faraway draws near.

The long-striding she-camels rejoice beneath my reciters,

Whenever the chant grows sweet in late afternoon.

And it will reach distant Egypt and Syria,

And Mecca and Upper Egypt will recite it.

    And Baghdad resounds with praise,

Even a newborn almost recites its eloquent words.

All this, though my allotted shares have not been restored,

And my heart is worn out by their being withheld.
