O Khalid al-Dawla, he gives nothing

except a gift of lasting renown.

Bestow on me my estates, which I bought

at the noblest prices, paid from my life.

I spent on them every precious thing,

the most pleasing of them being the choicest of my verse.

    For everything except my estate

cannot mend the rent caused by poverty.

And when it is compared with your generosity,

it is like a bird’s sip from a sea.
