My two friends from the noblest of Tamim ibn Khindif,

I call as a proud man acquainted with indignity:

Lead the pale camels by their necks away from the heart of a camp,

hateful to guests, a disgrace among stopping places.

Away from the tribe: no resident neighbor is safe

among them, nor is anyone who wrongs them afraid.

Tents with short poles, as though they were

a den of hyenas that have holed up in fear.

When others camp on high ground, they turn aside

to the sheltered recesses of the far-stretching lowland.

In their coarseness, they tear at their sleeves,

when they eat, tearing like snatching hawks.

Their harm is sharp as the points of sturdy spears,

and their abasement like the frail twigs of arak trees.

Outward appearances like the morning, but beneath them

inner selves black as thickening night.

May a cloud that brings its people plenty pass you by,

and may the downpour of supple, blood-dripping spears drench you.
