إنif لمnot يلوذواthey seek refuge بشباat the keen edges of صارميmy sword
May the great bowls of Darim's clan be overturned,
The eyes of the living shed tears for their home
If they do not seek refuge at my sword's keen edge;
Unless they take refuge in mighty warriors

بجريدwith a cavalry band لاneither مُبْقٍsparing ولاnor راحِمِmerciful
With a keen blade drawn by a keen warrior,
With polished swords unsheathed by the polishers
With a cavalry band that neither spares nor shows mercy;
With unrelenting, pitiless blades

رداءَthe cloak of ليلthe night of الرَّهجbattle dust العاتمِpitch-dark
With a raid that clothes the height of morning
With a raid that dons the garb of dawn
In the cloak of battle dust's pitch-dark night;
The cloak of the dark, gloomy night
شعواءraging لاnot الحاميthe defender بذيpossessed of نجدةٍprowess

Raging—no defender shows prowess
Savage, with no defender to provide aid
In it, nor does the fugitive escape unscathed;
No fugitive escapes unharmed

تخلطُmingles بَرَّthe righteous of القومِthe people بالآثمwith the sinner
Unjust in its thrusting, cruelly oppressive,
Unjust in stabbing, gloomy in darkness
It mingles the righteous among the people with the sinner.
Mixing the piety of the people with sin

God's steeds surge through its dust,
God's horses stir up the battlefield
Bearing every rider afloat, swimming in the fray,
With every valiant warrior engaged in the fray

منsome رامحٍkicking فيهاamong them ومنand some عاذمbiting
On steeds like wolves of the ghada thickets,
On steeds like furious wolves
Some among them kicking, and some biting.
Some charging with spears, others resolute

Until, when they had carried us through a cloud of dust,
Until Kusbtal was defeated by us
Some flying away from us, some crouching low,
And the bird of prey humbled

And the smooth had grown rough through us,
And tranquility returned to our abode
Assuring a comfortable home,
Embracing the gentle, peaceful home

واستسلمand surrendered المهزومُthe vanquished للهازمto the victor
And the striking of necks had humbled the proud,
The prey submitted to the blows of the archers
And the vanquished had surrendered to the victor,
And the defeated surrendered to the victors

يُسترجعُis reclaimed الغُنْمُthe spoils منfrom العانمthe booty-taker (likely الغانم)
We returned to a generous man's pardon, whereby
We show generosity to the generous among them
The spoils are reclaimed from their taker.
Regaining the spoils from the despoilers
أقتلُI slay حلماًthrough forbearance وتقولُand says العُلىGlory
واعجباًoh, what a wonder! للقائلat the speaker الباسمِsmiling
I slay through forbearance, and Glory says:
I subdue rage and you say “How excellent!”
'How wondrous is the smiling speaker!'
Marveling at the cheerful sayer

I have risen above the reach of foul speech,
I rise above the influence of the slanderers' talk
So I do not fear the reviler's folly.
So I do not fear the foolish insult

If the star were stoned by the hands of mankind,
If the stars were stoned by people's hands
The stoning hand would never make it bleed.
No hand could ever destroy them

When ignorance attacks with its clamor,
When ignorance spreads its clamor
I meet it with the sheathed yet wounding blade.
I meet it with the sheathed sword of speech

I turn my ear from it; it has heeded nothing
I turn a deaf ear to it, paying no heed
But the words of the learned king,
Except to the words of the knowing King

سَمعُthe ear of يمينYamin (right hand) الدِّينِal-Din (the faith) عنfrom لائمِa reproacher
Just as, when bounty was freely lavished,
As the trusted ear disregarded base gossip
Yamin al-Din's ear turned away from a reproacher:
Listening only to the religion's oath
القاتلُthe slayer of المَحْلَdrought بمعروفهthrough his generosity
والحاملُand the bearer of الغُرمَdebt عنon behalf of الغارمthe debtor
The slayer of drought through his generosity,
The killer who fulfills his duty with good
And bearer of debt on the debtor's behalf;
The carrier of others' burdens

The rainer of generosity from his palm
With every abundant, streaming shower;
Quenching every thirsty soul

ليسَhe is not بمنَّانٍone who reproaches with his gifts ولاnor نادمِregretful

And giver of plentiful wealth to his petitioners,
The giver of abundance when asked
Neither reproaching them with his favors nor regretting them;
Is neither condescending nor regretful

And who strikes heads with his counsels
The striker of necks with his judgments
When the sword glances off the reviler.
When the sword calls for the blamer

Proud nobles—and such is the grace of their manners
Some of their noble traits confuse
That the master is indistinguishable from the servant.
The servant for the master
