May God be the chief vizier's guardian as long as there rises

a sun, and rain revives the withered remnants of lifeless earth.

His mantle brims with bounty, like the sky's clouds pouring rain,

and sharp swords are put to shame by his qualities.

Resolute and dignified in peace and in battle,

the wind takes resolve from him, the mountain forbearance.

Resourceful, he slays the souls of drought through generosity,

without reminders of favors; and hope lives in his presence.

His pledge and affection are changed by neither

treachery nor weariness, however long the years.

    لكنْ طَروبٌ بأذْكارِ العُلى ثَمِلُ

    Clear-minded, no calamity loosens his clasp about his knees;

yet rapturous, he is drunk on mentions of lofty glory.

He is an army; his fury blunts the vicissitudes of time,

and bright swords and spears recoil from meeting him.

When slender lances prove too feeble to thrust at foes,

throat-hollows and eyes take fright at his pens.

Muhammad, ʿAdud al-Din, whose merit is attested

    by illustrious nobles and dynasties.

Bounty gushes in torrents from his fingertips,

when the clouds are rainless, their water mere dregs.

And travelers depart from the sweet waters of his watering place,

once first and second draughts from it have quenched the people.

They know no refuge but his bounty,

so, when they depart from his generosity, they return home.

Righteous, fortified by piety and protected

by his sincerity; he trusts in the All-Merciful.

The arrows of calamity glance off his ample coats of mail

when they are loosed, and Thuʿal is shamed before him.

So may he live for glory and lofty honor, hastening

to attain the utmost of both, as long as camels groan.
