    لهُمْ بالسَّهْبِ مُكْثٌ واعْتِكارُ

    Many a band of riders, like falcons, journeyed by night;

on the open steppe they halted and circled about.

Their mounts were like ostriches of the wilderness,

upon which a great host bore down, setting them to flight.

The jinn's watering places veer away from them,

and the deserts fear them for their restless vigor.

Their nightly resting place is on their mounts' humps,

and their sleep is scant, so hard they press on.

Night travel wore their pale camels thin,

and journeying and travel wasted their withers,

until their full-grown camel became exhausted,

its long strides shortened by weariness.

And their heads began to nod,

as wine sets its drinker swaying.

Drowsiness and deep-seated worry made them reel,

its bearer prey to imaginings and dread.

I approached them and offered words of counsel,

while they were bewildered by their plight and at a loss:

Turn their reins aside, and bend your course

toward a sanctuary whose protector is the All-Merciful.

Lay down your burdens in an imam's protected domain,

    whose piety is his inner garment, worn before his robes;

at the sanctuary of a radiant man of Maʿadd,

whose ancestor takes pride in his descendant.

There is might that keen swords fear,

and there is bounty the rain showers envy.

There is a radiant, bright-browed man, illumined

by God's light: his night is day.

His protective zeal gives him resolve,

and his serenity gives him dignity.

His favor and his wrath, in his two states,

throughout his days, are water and fire.

So his suppliant swims and drinks his fill,

while his foe meets burning and blazing flame.

The scholars all acknowledge his excellence,

and the seas envy the abundance of his bounty.

So the eloquent orator's speech is mere stammering,

and the deep of the swelling green sea is loose earth.

God's trustee and the guardian of His sanctuary,

the shepherd of creation and the beacon all point toward.

His whole night is deliberation and devotion,

while bounty-seekers collect their gifts and disperse.

At home with noble virtues and lofty deeds,

but before disgrace, wild and quick to flee.

    لها في كُلِّ مُعْتَرَكٍ مَطارُ

    He sends them forth like eagles of the wastelands;

every battlefield is their place of flight.

They scorn the water the firm-set mountains make well up,

and crave what the blades make gush forth.

They pass over tender, dew-wet grass, while within them

rages a craving for thick tresses and flowing locks.

He leads them to drink at hair-partings and necks—

the fortunate one, whose wrath is ruin.

When enemies lament his keen swords

at dawn, by night the pregnant she-camels lament them.

So no milk can ransom his full-uddered camels,

nor can flight save the man who fights him.

So they turned their camels toward an abode

secure, free from fear and dust.

An imam secures it and makes it ready,

the story of whose conduct is like perfume.

So joy to him in fasting and in all things,

for the world takes pride in his reign.
