Iraq has borne witness, and every accomplished reciter

within it, to the excellence of my panegyrics and my loyalty.

And they have passed them on—how many a traveler to uplands or lowlands

recites my praise of you and my tributes!

Even camels watered every fifth day, if they heard some of it,

would forsake the purest water as they came to drink.

I have made sincere love for you, O son of Muhammad,

and the splendor of God's faith—what splendor!—

    أسْطو ببأسهما على الأعْداء

    my hope and my treasure after all other treasures;

with the might of both I assail my enemies.

So when I see a hint of coldness,

I fear grave calamity from the beholder's faulty perception,

like a lovesick lover, whom coldness leads to imagine

a turning away and a lowered gaze.

And I, loyal in your absence, am not dismayed

by a slanderer's words or stealthy steps under cover.

I meet men, despite my modesty before them,

with a clear conscience, open-faced and unashamed.

So lift the veil from what I cannot account for,

O dispeller of afflictions and overwhelming grief!
