إنْif عَزَّis hard to attain لُقْياكmeeting you وماءُand the water of النَّدىbounty
إنْ عَزَّ لُقْياك وماءُ النَّدى
هامٍpouring down فإنيthen I am شاكرٌgrateful عاذِرُunderstanding
هامٍ فإني شاكرٌ عاذِرُ
If meeting you is hard, while the waters of bounty
If meeting you is hard, while the water of bounty
pour, then I am grateful—and I excuse you.
Pours down, then I am grateful and understanding.
يَسقيwaters السَّحابُthe clouds الجدبthe parched land سحّاًin torrents ولاand not
يَسقي السَّحابُ الجدب سحّاً ولا
يجتمعُcome together المَمْطورُthe rain-receiver والماطِرُand the rain-giver
يجتمعُ المَمْطورُ والماطِرُ
The cloud drenches the parched earth in torrents, though
The clouds water the parched land in torrents, yet never
the rained-upon and the rain-giver do not meet.
Do the rain-receiver and the rain-giver meet.
أحرزَhas secured نجمُNajm (star) الدينal-Din (the faith) سبقَfirst place in العُلىeminence
أحرزَ نجمُ الدين سبقَ العُلى
فكلُّso every ساعٍstriver دونهُbehind him حاسِرُexhausted
فكلُّ ساعٍ دونهُ حاسِرُ
Najm al-Din has won the race to glory’s heights;
Najm al-Din has secured first place in eminence;
thus every striver behind him is exhausted.
So every striver behind him is exhausted.
