If a festival's arrival adorns time,

then Baha al-Din is the adornment of festivals.

He is swift with hospitality; cold does not quench his fire,

nor do the clouds' broken promises hold back his bounty.

In his bounty you find him in the guise of a steady raincloud,

heavy with rain—and in battle, in the guise of a keen sword.

So his edge destroys, and his outpouring enriches,

when he strives to strike necks and perform noble deeds.

Then no blow but a cleaving stroke to the enemies' heads,

and no bounty but one downpour following another.

His knee-bands are fastened in his grand assembly,

around one supple of flank, yet firm when tested.

His boon companions sway him in peacetime,

and champions dread him on days of battle.

So may Abu al-Fadl, the valiant, live victorious,

with the things he seeks led toward him by nose-rings.

Whenever he casts off a festival, he dons another like it,

obeyed, so the most distant absentee is like one who has arrived.
