I shall send it forth among the houses, ranging far and wide,
I shall send them among the houses as spirited steeds;
and at its coming, resting places will collapse upon those asleep within:
at their coming, beds are shaken, sleepers and all.

Tamimite, Sayfite, Darimite—
Tamimi, Sayfi, Darimi by lineage,
prudence its driver, resolve its guide.
prudence is their driver, and resolve their leader.

It pours down amid a dust-dark battle whose heat leaves—
They rain down in a dust-dark battle whose heat parches the
men thirsting, while it gives the keen, cold blades their fill.
men, and slake the keen, cold blades.

Its hooves, complaining together of the kings’ injustice, cried aloud:
They complained to one another of the kings' tyranny; then
“Their crowns and diadems!”
their hooves shook hands with the kings' crowns and turban-knots.

A churning mêlée packed with young warriors, whose hearts,
They galloped with young men whose hearts seemed
when they storm the armored ranks, are boulders.
solid boulders when they stormed the mail-clad.

Every hardship in every ordeal becomes easy for them
Every calamity's hardship is easy for them
when they are enraged, and the far-distant draws near—
when angry, and what is distant and far away draws near.

against a people in whose midst no fire-stick strikes a spark,
Against a people among whom no fire-stick is struck
even when beacon-fires rise above the mountains.
when fires rise above the mountains.

إذاwhen الخيلthe horses جالتwheeled about تبتغيseeking منsomeone whom تُطاردthey pursue
Bold indeed at driving guests away, yet abject
They are bold in driving guests away, but abject
when the cavalry wheels, seeking someone to pursue.
when the horses wheel, seeking someone to pursue.

It was they who clouded affection’s purity and disturbed
They muddied the purity of affection and stirred
the breeze of meeting, though union had stilled it.
the breeze of mutual loathing, which closeness had kept still.

It was they who foolishly turned the heights of honor against me,
And in their folly they angered lofty honor on my account,
though I had committed no offense—the nights bear witness.
though I had done no wrong; the nights bear witness.

Among the things that grieve me is that my soul grows attached,
And what grieves me, too, is that my soul grows attached,
and despite the beloved’s wrong, my heart still courts.
and my heart keeps wooing despite the beloved's cruelty.

Too proud to stoop to baseness, yet tender in love:
Defiant against baseness, tender toward love—
so love is not driven out, nor is the army in pursuit.
so love is not expelled, nor does the army give chase.

The dawn of gray breathed through the night of my hair-part,
The dawn of grayness breathed through the night of my hair's parting,
untimely, though no crown-binder had yet bound a crown upon my head.
astray, though no one had bound a crown upon it.

At five-and-twenty, I had never imagined a gray hair,
And I had not expected a gray hair at twenty-five,
save that a mounting care had set my head ablaze.
save that excessive worry had set my head ablaze.

How long shall I feed my soul hopes of every lofty aim,
How long shall I promise my soul every great achievement,
while Time drives me back from it and bars my way?
while my fate drives me away from it and holds me back,

And shall I look for bounty to rain from the hands of a people
and seek a trickle of kindness from the hands of people
in whose keeping hopes and noble deeds die?
among whom hopes and praiseworthy deeds die?

If I praise them in radiant rhymes,
If I praise them with radiant rhymes
then, to vindicate me, the odes satirize me through that praise.
with some justification, the poems lampoon me through that praise.
