قد حويتُ السُمَّ والشَّهدَ معاً

قد حويتُ السُمَّ والشَّهدَ معاً

بالنَّدى والبأسِ في لونِ مِدادِ

I have held poison and honey together,

I have contained poison and honey together

Through bounty and might, in the hue of ink.

With dew and might in the hue of ink

وفضلتُ الجنسَ اِذْ يُكتبُ بي

مَدحُ مولانا عليِّ بن طِرادِ

And I have surpassed my kind, for with me is written

And I have preferred the race when it is written with me
