I asked the God of the Throne, Muhammad's Lord,

for the long life of the vizier Ahmad ibn Muhammad,

obeyed whenever he puts his day's commands into force,

secure therein against evil consequences on the morrow.

When proud kings kiss his carpet,

the nearest of them to his sleeve and hand wins glory.

For he is but the star on the horizon of eminence,

by whom the seeker of high rank and glory finds his way.

Radiant, beaming with cheer, readily accessible,

swift to feed his guests, a scaler of heights.

With kindness he reassures everyone driven away,

and gathers every scattered form of goodness.

He bestows honor freely, without being tricked,

and offers kindness first, with nothing stinted.

And drunk with love of lofty achievements, as though

tales of eminence had given him Sarkhad's wine to drink.

He lent the towering mountain his surpassing composure,

and his resolve to the edge of the Indian blade.

So the towering gray mountain heeds no raging gale,

and the keen-cutting sword fears no proud man's head.

He cannot bear the slightest disgrace, yet his breast

is broad, rivaling every barren plain and open wilderness.

And his radiance guides night visitors at evening

to his bounty, before any fire or hearth.

His neighbor takes refuge in a keen sword, its blade drawn,

yet in forbearance it is sheathed, both edges hidden.

Thus with his pardon he effaces every grave offense,

and with his might he protects every outcast.

When his days delay a promise of glory,

he lays hold of them like an unyielding creditor.

So the Crown of Kings draws it along with firm resolve,

as a camel with a nose-peg yields to a mighty arm.
