He spurns humiliation, a noble-hearted man of the sons of Mudar.

By his radiant brow, darkness and gloom are dispelled.

Lavish in gifts, trusted among his clan,

They never opposed him in any matter, nor fell into discord.

Combat and debate alike sing his praises:

Excellence yields, and souls are snatched away.

Every bountiful giver has raised him high; when withheld

Are heaven's clouds, men draw from his two hands.

    وإنْ لقوا فضواري معركٍ قُصفُ

    When they sit with knees clasped, they are lofty mountains, firmly rooted;

And when they meet the foe, they are ravening, devastating beasts of battle.

A people who, when the horses turn and flee,

And the army surrenders for fear of death, wheel back to attack.

    Their assembly, in peacetime, gathers

Magnanimous men who know nothing but earning praise.

Far be it that honor's debt should be tardy in payment,

When you, among all mankind, are an honor to the faith.

Why, then, is my verse kept waiting for its reward,

When prompt repayment for an advance is surely due from you?

Do not draw down a veil of estrangement

Before me, for my verse is a fine, enduring recompense.

    وشرُّها بطويل المَتْحِ يُعْتسفَُ

    The best watering place is the nearest to one who thirsts;

And the worst demands a long, laborious hauling of the bucket.

Were it not for calamities, when they grew ravenous,

As droop-eared wolves grow savage toward the flock,

And time's injustice, which has left my fortunes crushed—

So the king sings praise, and the master plies a trade—

I would not have sought a livelihood I eke out,

Gulping it at times in great draughts, and at others sipping.

Nor have I quailed at a calamity that ravaged my honor:

For the sun shines at times, and is eclipsed.

Even if calamity's night overshadows my glory's light,

The full moon's halo bears dark marks amid its radiance.

And a man of bounty: no reminders of favors, no extravagance.

And brimming, rain-dripping clouds envy your bounty.

And how often you have notched the edges of keenly honed white swords,

With one of slender stature, slim about the flanks.

Generosity is your nature; you do not force it,

While in others, acts of bounty are burdens.

And though I may be praising myself and boasting,

Conceit is the bane of wit in one deemed witty.
