يبذلُ المال فانْ حَلَّ بهِ

يبذلُ المال فانْ حَلَّ بهِ

لاجىءٌ من صَرْفِ دهرٍ منَعهْ

لاجىءٌ من صَرْفِ دهرٍ منَعهْ

He freely gives his wealth; and if there comes to him

He spends his wealth, so if resolved with it

A refugee from time's reversals, he protects him.

A refugee from the decree of a prohibiting fate

فَلِذي الفاقَةِ خِصْبٌ وغِنىً

فَلِذي الفاقَةِ خِصْبٌ وغِنىً

ولذي الخِيفَةِ أمْنٌ وَدَعَهْ

ولذي الخِيفَةِ أمْنٌ وَدَعَهْ

Thus the needy find abundance and wealth,

So for the impoverished, fertility and wealth

And the fearful find safety and repose.

And for the frightened, safety and left it

أبَداً يجمعُ الأسِ الغِنى

أبَداً يجمعُ الأسِ الغِنى

ويَفُضُّ الجودُ ما قد جَمَعهْ

ويَفُضُّ الجودُ ما قد جَمَعهْ

Wealth forever gathers sorrow,

Forever he gathers money, the wealthy

And generosity scatters what it has gathered.

And generosity overflows what he had gathered

زيْنبيٌّ يفْخرُ الدهرُ

زيْنبيٌّ يفْخرُ الدهرُ

به أحْرزَ المجْدَ غُلاماً يَفَعَهْ

به أحْرزَ المجْدَ غُلاماً يَفَعَهْ

A Zaynabi—Time takes pride

Zainabiy proudly whom time

In him; he won glory as an adolescent boy.

Boasts of, he achieved glory as an active youth

شمسُ مجْدٍ وعُلا مُشْرِقَةٌ

شمسُ مجْدٍ وعُلا مُشْرِقَةٌ

منْ رِداءٍ وقميصٍ طُلَعَهْ

منْ رِداءٍ وقميصٍ طُلَعَهْ

A radiant sun of glory and eminence,

A shining sun of glory and highness

Rising forth from cloak and shirt.

Of a cloak and shirt it rose

ضيِّقُ الأعْذارِ لكنْ ضَيْفهُ

ضيِّقُ الأعْذارِ لكنْ ضَيْفهُ

من حِماهُ وقِراهُ في سَعَْ

من حِماهُ وقِراهُ في سَعَْ

He is sparing of excuses, yet his guest

Constricted excuses but his guest

Finds ample shelter and hospitality.

Who protected and honored him with latitude

المَعالي خلَصتْ مُلْكاً لهُ

المَعالي خلَصتْ مُلْكاً لهُ

وهي في خُلْقِ سِواهُ قُلَعَهْ

وهي في خُلْقِ سِواهُ قُلَعَهْ

Noble qualities have become his exclusive possession,

The glories extracted for him a kingdom

While in others' character they are only on loan.

While in the creation of others snatched it

من قريشٍ حيثُ غاياتِ العُلى

من قريشٍ حيثُ غاياتِ العُلى

وسواهم قاصرٌ أنْ يَفْرَعَهْ

وسواهم قاصرٌ أنْ يَفْرَعَهْ

Of Quraysh, where greatness reaches its utmost height,

Of Quraish, where the heights of ascension

While others fall short of rising above it.

And others, falling short to branch it

لرماحِ القومِ سكْبٌ منْ دَمٍ

لرماحِ القومِ سكْبٌ منْ دَمٍ

ولِغُرَّانِ المَقاري دَعْدَعَهْ

ولِغُرَّانِ المَقاري دَعْدَعَهْ

The people's spears spill blood,

For the tribe's spears, a pouring of blood

And the gleaming guest-bowls are filled to overflowing.

And for the thick-haired playful foals neighing

وابو القاسمِ منهمْ سابقٌ

وابو القاسمِ منهمْ سابقٌ

كادَ يستصحبُ كُلاًّ تَبَعَهْ

كادَ يستصحبُ كُلاًّ تَبَعَهْ

And Abu al-Qasim is foremost among them;

And Abul Qasim among them a predecessor

He has all but taken everyone along in his train.

He almost took along each who followed him

أنا من فرطِ هوى مِدْحتهِ

أنا من فرطِ هوى مِدْحتهِ

صِرتُ أهْوى من زَماني جُمعهْ

صِرتُ أهْوى من زَماني جُمعهْ

I, from my great love of praising him,

I, from intense love praising him

Have come to love the Fridays among my days.

Became infatuated with his entire epoch
