God be praised—how noble these mounts!

    They bore a stout-hearted, swift-moving man,

Girded for terror, vigorous and resolute,

Embracing a deep sea of darkness,

Until, journeying by night, they reached Ali:

    Radiant-faced, openhanded, a Hashimite,

    Intoxicated with praise, generous-spirited,

Easy to lead, yet untamable and unbowed,

    يفِلُّ مِنْ عزْمتهِ الهِنْديَّا

    Alert in perplexing matters, keen-witted.

    He blunts the Indian sword with his resolve;

He shatters the Khatti spear with his judgments.

You find him magnanimous in giving, an armored champion.

When the clouds failed the thirsty,

He was for us the season’s first rain and the rain that followed.
