Ever charging in valor and bounty—neither wearies

His character; from indecency he ever flees.

A mighty champion, his wrath a blazing fire,

And, when bestowing bounty, a copious downpour.

The brown shafts of lofty spears swerve from his pens,

And a keen-edged, cleaving sword fears his resolve.

When night grows dark with calamity and battle,

A parchment sheet and lines of script dispel their darkness.

The vizier's bounty is free of stinting,

And in hardship, though excused, he still puts others first.

Disheartening lack of arms does not rob him of courage,

Nor does poverty check the dew of his palms.

Whether he charges or speaks, in peace or battle,

Champions and scholars attest to his excellence.

You find Abu Ja'far, while calamity swirls,

Cheerful of countenance, with gladness and radiance.
