And I was told—the All-Merciful is the noblest defender—

of an illness afflicting the horsemen-crushing lion in his lair.

and my mind came to be in a bird's foremost flight feathers.

And I said, with a surge of anxious thought within me:

Ill forebodings belong to anyone but Baha al-Din.

For with Abu al-Fadl, bravery and generosity

take the place of white sword-edges and rain-bearing clouds.

and he deploys them between Majd and Nasir.

nor can fear terrify the defender of his sanctuary.

He chafes at the lushness of ease, yet he

is the noblest in enduring the privations of lofty honor.

among the illustrious nobles who, when they gather in council,

you see lofty virtues between a towering mountain and a swelling sea.

Their peace tightens their knee-wrappings; but when they wage war,

their sword-edges undo some of the knots of mail coifs.

The caliphate's bosom guards them with jealous care,

and makes them partners in its prohibitions and commands.
